Centra Family Hurling Day

Post date: Jul 23, 2013 8:16:42 PM

First of all we will start with the numbers, 130 children registered and countless unregistered siblings, visiting cousins and parents all convened from 11.45am onward. There was still a few remaining enthusiastic participants and supporters for the adult tug of war at close to 5pm.

In between we had puc fadas, water relays, point scoring, penalty shooting, welly throwing, target shooting, tug of war, the U6s had their own obstacle course and sumo tackling; we had burgers straight from the BBQ, endless juice, water, tea, coffee, sambos and buns; not to mention our own ice cream van.

We had County Seniors and County Minors, we had a bouncy castle, summer sounds on request, Face painting, nail painting, an impromptu fire drill but most of all we had fun. Even after all that we had a high scoring Pagett Cup followed by a keenly contested George Walsh Cup.

There is a big thank you list starting with the officers and coaches who met with Serena from McCann's Centra every Wednesday night for several weeks to plan everything. They were supplemented by the volunteers involved in organising and helping out on the day (members of the Hurling & Camogie Clubs, parents, etc). Our Coaches really drive the activity in the club and we had 16 coaches covering 8 events on two main pitches, 2/3 in the all weather with under 6s, we donated two of our top coaches to BBQ duty and another to act as Chief Co-ordinator on the day (Well Done, Caroline) and a few others were seconded to various other parts. The Pitch Committee in the guise of Liam and Sean G were on hand to smooth a few wrinkles early in the morning (I think Noel Thomas actually came to just to enjoy himself for once). The event really highlighted the potential of the site to host events not only when the present developments are finished but the advantages a fully finished hard surface would bring was evident on Sunday.

We have many to thank who were there on the day like;

our Tea Ladies, Chefs, Face Painters, Paddy Sir Bouncelot, DJ Noel McIntyre, Sean Lydon photographer, Galway Seniors David Collins and Tony Óg Regan, our Galway Minor Conor Noone, our phalanx of registrars, our traffic control crew (don't drive into the banner), our Centra performers, our Fire Officer, Ultan, our match referee, Morgan Darcy Snr, and Serena Guihan (who put in a very full shift).

There were also the many supporters who provided the means to make a great day without enjoying any of it themselves:

Fiona & John (Totally Balloony), O’Toole Transport (thuck used to transport equipment), Arus Uilinn (for the use of tables)

Image Marketing, Con Dooley (for use of BBQ) Liam Hynes, Joe McDonagh & Derek Conneely (for use of parasols/marquees)

Pete Fox (for the PA System), Supervalu (for the refrigerated van, Godsend!)

but particularly to Centra for sponsoring a real bright spot in the summer!
