Toughest Test Yet This Weekend

Mágh Cuilinn really did make old news of the team’s season opener in Fohenagh in the League (a draw) and that crucial referred to clash on the 26th September. Niall Mannion’s goal after a few minutes to give Magh Cuilinn a 1-2 to 0-00 lead set the tone for a comprehensive performance and albeit playing with a significant breeze they were good value for their lead at halftime with a 9 to 4 free count against them keeping Ahascragh Fohenagh in the game.
Some calm halftime discussions saw even the free count reversed and only a bizarre OG from Matt Donohue led to a short period of uncertainty, which required a fine save from Eric Fox and the lead temporarily reduced to two points. No panic ensued and the lead was gradually extended to five points at the end, which, in truth, was the least the performance deserved. Indeed it was difficult to fault any of the 18 individual performances on the day.
The players have restored Senior hurling at the second attempt and now look forward to the task of securing a second County Intermediate title in five years. The Abbeyknockmoy side we face on Saturday will be a different side to the already qualified side we met in Pearse Stadium on 10th October. Our players will be going to the well for the seventh consecutive weekend of knockout championship this Saturday in the knowledge that they must play a Connacht football semi-final on Sunday in Roscommon.
On the other hand, anyone who witnessed the stoic response to the confirmation of the weekend fixtures could not fail to be impressed. Many of these players experienced something similar in 2007, when a successful football campaign in Connacht was paralleled by a run to a quarter final replay in hurling. Indeed on the equivalent of the Bank Holiday weekend just passed, they won and celebrated a championship football final on Saturday and still had the determination and will to win to turn up and put Kilbeacanty comprehensively to the sword in a League semi-final on the Bank Holiday Monday morning.
