Clooney Quin Tournament 2013

Post date: Jul 31, 2013 10:36:42 AM

Maigh Cuilinn U14 hurlers competed in the Annual Clooney Quin tournament on Saturday 27th July. A loyal bunch of 20 hurlers left the village at 9am to travel to Clooney Quin. We were accompanied by our mascot for the day Colin Clancy. This year only three teams participated as Crusheen had to withdraw. The teams taking part were Maigh Cuilinn, Garryspillane ( Limerick ) and the host team Clooney Quin. The day began with the now customary team march behind the Tulla Pipe band which was then followed by Amhran na Bhfiain. The tournament this year was run on a round robin scoring system with the following rules; 4pts for a winning team.

2pts to each team in the event of a draw.

1pt bonus to any team that scored 9pts or more in a match ( Goals excluded )

1pt bonus for any team that finished within 5 points of the winner of a match.

With the rules explained it was on with the hurling. Maigh Cuilinn and Garryspillane played the first match of the tournament. The Garryspillane team were much bigger than the Maigh Cuilinn team but our lads put in a great performance. The level of skill and score taking by both teams was a joy to watch. Garryspillane won the match on a scoreline of 2-10 to 2-05. Maigh Cuilinn were awarded a 1pt bonus as we had finished within 5pts of Garryspillane.

The Maigh Cuilinn lads and mentors were then treated to lunch by our hosts. As always, the hospitality shown by Clooney Quin was superb. There was enough food to feed a nation!

During our lunch break Garryspillane defeated Clooney Quin in another entertaining game.

Our final game versus Clooney Quin was a very tight affair with both teams failing to get more than 2 or 3 points ahead at any stage. Once again the level of skill displayed by both teams was brilliant. Unfortunately Maigh Cuilinn were defeated by the narrowest of margins on a scoreline of 3-10 to 2-12. Our lads faught hard to the very end and were very unlucky not to have earned a draw at the very least.

The Clooney Quin competition is a great opportunity for our U14 Hurlers to compete with teams from outside our county and the lads on the bus home were already talking about next years competition. Special thanks to the Clooney Quin club for offering us the opportunity to take part in the competition and also for their hospitality on the day.

Well done to all the Maigh Cuilinn players who travelled on the day and wore the green and white with pride.
