Weekend Round-Up of a Busy 8th/9th March

After many false starts and several re-jigging of fixtures throughout the week, the competitive season finally got underway with two games at the weekend. Both fixtures were moved from Saturday to Sunday and threw in simultaneously, with our Intermediate team was away in Ballinderreen in the League and our U14's were at home to Sarsfields in Baile Doite

The game in Ballinderreen did not go so well. With only a point between the sides at halftime, it was Ballinderreen who extended their lead at halftime. Both sides achieved the same number of scores but goals win matches and Ballinderreen prevailed by 4 points, 3-08 to 1-10.

In contrast, it was goals all round for the u14s who added a decent haul of points also in a 6-08 to 0-03 demolition of Sarsfields in their first Championship outing. Next weekend they make the short journey to Tonabrocky to take on Rahoon Newcastle.

The biggest event of the weekend was undoubtedly the 5K run in aid of the Ryan Croker Benefit fund. With about 60% more attending than was expected, the event tested the parking capacity of the area and the capacity of our new facilities to cater for the crowd, including the many volunteers on registration, catering, marshalling and traffic control. The Facebook page of the fund has plenty of photos and information on the success the event proved to be. Well done all.

U16s are back training for a couple of weeks now and they begin their campaign at the end of the month in Ballymacward against Pearses.

Next week is Paddy's weekend, which seems to have crept up quickly this year. That means time for the annual event the Fr Fitzgerald Cup. Hopefully we will have more details later in the week.

The much postponed U21 campaign has run across the League fixtures in adult hurling and it now unclear where in the calendar the competition will be played with Minor due to start in April.
