‘Walk for life, Walk for health’

Post date: Oct 1, 2013 8:09:01 PM

On Saturday next the 5th of October 2013, the Galway GAA/Cancer Care West ‘walk for life, walk for health’ event will take place across Galway City & County.

The partnership between Galway GAA and Cancer Care West is a unique opportunity to educate and increases awareness around cancer related topics and through the involvement with the GAA, this message will reach a much wider audience.

Over the past two years this event has raised €280,000 split on a 50/50 basis between Cancer Care West and Galway GAA. The 50% share for the GAA is divided between Galway football and hurling teams training fund, (25%) and the remaining 25% for GAA clubs in the Galway.

This event, which is supported by Supervalu Supermarkets, involves all clubs in Galway who have organised walks in their own locality with the support of Cancer Care West personnel. Each walk will start at 11am in each local area and sponsorship cards have been issued to all clubs and walk coordinators.

The walk in our locality begins at Killanin Community Centre at 11am and progresses via the Rocks road to Páirc Mhaigh Cuilinn in Baile Doite. After a short break the walk continues to the finish at McCanns Supervalu. Last year a Garda escort was available for the busier second section of the walk and we hope for the same again. Those who don't feel up to doing the full distance can finish or start in Páirc Mhaigh Cuilinn. Kevin Kyne is once again running a shuttle bus for people who may be parked in Killanin Community Centre and need a lift back there from Supervalu.

The primary aim of the event is to raise money for cancer support services. Sponsorship cards can be obtained from Kenneth Fox or John Joe Higgins or alternatively participants can make a contribution at the start of the walk.

Galway GAA and Cancer Care West earnestly ask your support for this initiative, support that will help to build on the outstanding success in the two previous years.
