James Costello Memorial Tournament

Our U11 hurlers were invited to participate in the James Costello Memorial Tournament hosted by Turloughmore in Lackagh pitch on Saturday 16th August. This was the first year that clubs outside of Turloughmore were invited to play and it provided the spectators with some great displays of hurling! Our squad of 17 players competed in this 13 a-side competition with our first game against the home team (Turloughmore) in which we were narrowly beaten but put up a tough battle. With Ardrahan pulling out of the competition at very short notice, it left us with more game to play and unfortunately, we lost this game to Craughwell in the Shield Final.
The strong wind played a huge factor and it seemed to ease in the second half of both our games (when we had the wind at our backs!) and some of our players also suffered injuries during play (one young player, Sam Gibson, left his sick bed to be there), nonetheless, our young players showed great strength and determination and there were some fine displays of blocking, hooking, passing and scoring. Small things made the difference and both players and coaches have learnt a lot from this competition and these games will improve their performances and help to prepare these boys for U12 Championship next year. Well done boys!
Every player received a medal (presented to them by Sean Walsh, Galway Bay FM) along with some treats, so all in all they were happy leaving the pitch after a cold, windy day in Lackagh. A special word of thanks to Turloughmore Hurling Club for inviting us to participate in the tournament and providing refreshments and food for the supporters and players.
We have invited Turloughmore to play us in again in a challenge within the next few weeks so watch out for the webtext. Keep hurling lads!
