Heroes of great days past pass on

Two icons of great and long tradition of hurling in Mágh Cuilinn passed to their eternal reward this week.
John Faherty from Clooniffe, a member of the first team to win a County title in 1937 and one of the first group of players to wear the Mágh Cuilinn jersey at Senior Championship level passed away in his nineties in his long time home in London. John was extremely proud of their wins in 1937 and again in 1944 and their Senior classic semi-final joust with Clarenbridge in 1939. (Cashel won their five in a row by a slender 2 points in a 17 goal final). John maintained an interest always and responded to the club's invitation to the commemoration of County title winning teams in the 1990's. He was despite his absence abroad a generous supporter of the club.
Kevin Darcy, a sadly much younger man, also passed away this week. Kevin was a member of the "golden generation" who won back to back Junior and Intermediate titles in 1963 and 1964 and who competed at Senior level through the 60's and 70's. His finest hour was that 1964 final. When he was released from the shackles of the great Gus Lohan in the second half, he played a central role in an extraordinary turnaround, scoring 11 points. His son, Brian, reprised much of his father's class in a long career in the Mágh Cuilinn jersey.
